When Trust is Broken
Stella’s life changes in a split second when her closest friend, DR.MARY SLIWA phones her, screaming. “Stella, please help me!” Stella discovers that her friend’s niece has surreptitiously admitted her to a locked Alzheimer unit.
Stella and Mary, a respected and accomplished physician, have known each other for more than thirty years. They met while working at the same hospital and became loyal, trusting friends.
Prior to her retirement Mary purchased the empty lot next to Stella and built the house of her dreams for her and her older sister Rita. She was a faith filled person who when she retired at seventy-two, was looking forward to continuing to do God’s work as she lived her life in the comfort of her home.
Small lapses of memory begin to occur in Mary’s daily life. She recognizes the beginning signs of Alzheimer disease and has an attorney establish an irrevocable living trust that states her wish to remain I her home with care, if feasible. She names her niece JEAN as Power of Attorney and Stella as Trustee.
Later events in Mary’s life, prompt Jean to activate her role as Power of Attorney. During this time Jean discovers the trust and reads that upon Mary’s death, Rita, her sister will be the sole beneficiary of Mary’s estate with Stella overseeing the trust. Upon Rita’s death, the remaining estate would pass on to Stella.. Tensions between Jean and Stella develop. Egregious acts of pure greed perpetuated by her niece begin to sweep into Mary’s life.
Jean makes a plan that ultimately removes Stella as Trustee and presents Mary as unable to live independently or be cared for in her own home as stipulated in her trust. In order to accomplish this Jean uses her status as a physician to paint a false picture of Mary having advanced dementia, ultimately resulting in Mary’s admission to a locked Alzheimer unit.
Stella responds to Mary’s plea for help. Without hesitation she commits to undo this grave injustice. Many obstacles and obstructions are overcome in returning Mary to her home. Her life is consumed with a myriad of emotions during multiple court proceedings to reinstate herself as Trustee. She pledges, to keep Mary from slipping into the throes of dementia.
After eighteen months the court ultimately agrees to right the wrongs that have plagued Mary. Jean is removed as Power of Attorney and Guardian, and Stella happily assumes these roles. Mary is returned to her home with a twenty-four/seven caretaker and lives out her remaining time enjoying her freedom and friends. She dies peacefully with her friend at her side.
